IFIM Business School students visit Toyota Kirloskar Motors , Bidadi

27th September, 2016

The long awaited D-Day, 27 Sep’16 finally arrived. Around 27 enthusiastic students from PGDM Batch 2015-17, a mix of all streams visited Toyota Kirloskar Auto Private Limited in Bidadi Industrial Area which is around 46 kms away from our IFIM Business School. We would like to thank the CCE department and Prof. Rupesh, who accompanied us to the plant and gave us this remarkable opportunity to gain practical exposure on the workings of a manufacturing plant. The visit was facilitated by Mr Gopinath of TKM.

Our day commenced with a brief presentation about the Toyota plant by him. He candidly elaborated about the intricacies of the assembly operations. After a tea break, we also got to know the history of Toyota and Kirloskar and the idea being instrumental in the joint venture of both the firms. We had been granted the permission to enter the Assembly Line. But, we were unable to enter the Welding, Paint and Chassis lines. Hence, Mr Gopinath showed us a video which explained the functioning of those units. We were instructed to wear helmets for safety purpose and carry walkie - talkies which acted as the mode of communication to avoid the noise inside the plant.

It was a delight to learn that Plant 1 has the capacity to produce 1 lakh units p.a which includes Toyota Corolla and Altis. Plant 2 has the capacity to produce 2 lakh units p.a which includes other Toyota cars in India. Later, we went to Assembly line and saw how cars were manufactured and how they move in the assembly line step by step. It was a visual treat to see the cars as skeletons in the first assembly line followed by gradual additions of various parts. The cars then get culminated into fully fledged bodies with the constant handling of manual experts who were performing their tasks with utmost ease and care. The movement of cars in the assembly line was awesome. After the briefing, few of us shared our experiences and learnings with Mr Gopinath.

We were able to connect with the concepts that we have already learnt in the SCM classes which include the concept of 5’s, concept of Lean Manufacturing, the 7 wastes, JIT and Jidoka. We gained valuable insights & also learnt as to how Toyota maintains discipline and decorum and how it prioritizes Safety which is in line with the Toyota’s Slogan : “Safety First, Quality Must”. It was indeed a very memorable trip which we would cherish for our lifetime.
